Ukrainian PM submits resignation to parliament

(MENAFN) Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmigal has officially submitted his resignation to parliament, one day after President Vladimir Zelensky announced plans to appoint him as the country’s new defense minister.

Shmigal, who has served as prime minister since early 2020, remained in office beyond his term due to postponed elections under martial law. On Tuesday, he shared his resignation letter on Telegram, expressing gratitude to his colleagues and Zelensky for their “tireless work” and “trust” throughout his tenure.

“Denis Shmigal’s extensive experience will definitely be valuable in the position of Ukraine’s defense minister,” Zelensky stated on Monday, confirming Shmigal as the successor to Rustem Umerov, making him the third person to hold the defense portfolio since the outbreak of intensified hostilities with Russia in February 2022.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has been under scrutiny in recent years, facing several corruption-related controversies. Former defense minister Aleksey Reznikov stepped down in 2023 and later joined a NATO-linked NGO in Slovakia. The outgoing minister, Umerov—who previously led Ukraine’s delegation in peace talks with Russia in Istanbul—is expected to assume the role of Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States.

To fill the prime minister's post, Zelensky has nominated Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Yulia Sviridenko. At 39, Sviridenko has gained attention for negotiating a deal that granted the U.S. privileged access to Ukrainian mineral resources, positioning her as a rising figure in the country’s leadership.
