European leaders push for strong Ukraine security guarantees
National security advisors were instructed to maintain close consultations in the coming days to reinforce Ukraine’s defensive capabilities. As noted in the joint statement, “The leaders underscored the need for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, which includes robust security guarantees,” while also highlighting the importance of strengthening Kyiv’s ability to withstand “relentless attacks.”
Macron added on social media that Ukraine can rely on European backing for a "just and lasting" resolution, pointing to new EU and US sanctions targeting Russia.
Following the Downing Street meeting, European leaders and Zelenskyy participated in a video call to review the latest developments. Reports indicate they agreed that this is a critical moment to intensify support for Ukraine and sustain economic pressure on Moscow. During the call, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “highlighted the importance of the unity of views between European partners and the US for a just and lasting peace to be reached in Ukraine,” and Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit Rome on Tuesday to meet with Meloni.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof announced accelerated support for Ukraine totaling €700 million ($815 million), including €250 million ($285 million) for air defense systems and F-16 ammunition, while emphasizing close US cooperation. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen updated participants on EU defense and support initiatives, highlighting a reparations loan proposal using frozen Russian assets to cover war-related damages. She stated, "So the longer (Russian President Vladimir) Putin wages his war, spills blood, takes lives and destroys Ukrainian infrastructure - the higher the costs for Russia will be."
As negotiations continue, Ukrainian officials say they are seeking clarity on what security assurances the US is prepared to provide and whether Washington will act as a neutral mediator or favor Russian interests.
