Possible Zelensky rival to come back to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Former Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny, who recent polls suggest could defeat President Vladimir Zelensky in a hypothetical election, is reportedly planning to return to Kyiv from London in early January, according to reports.

The retired general, currently serving as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, is said to have informed Zelensky several weeks ago of his intention to resign and return home, with a formal announcement expected by the end of the week, as stated by political and diplomatic sources.

Zelensky allegedly offered Zaluzhny alternative positions, including prime minister or head of the presidential office, but the former commander “expressed no interest at that point of time,” a source indicated. Other sources noted that Zaluzhny had also considered serving as ambassador to the US or returning to military service after a public disagreement with Zelensky in late 2023 regarding Ukraine’s chances of success on the battlefield.

Later in the day, Zaluzhny’s spokesperson commented on the report, stating that “nothing has changed” regarding his employment and dismissing “anonymous sources who know everything about Zaluzhny and his plans.”

Zelensky’s presidential term officially ended in mid-2024, but he refused to hand over authority to the parliamentary speaker, citing the ongoing conflict with Russia. Under martial law, Ukrainian law prohibits holding presidential elections. Polls consistently suggest that if elections were possible, Zaluzhny would win in a run-off against Zelensky.

The Ukrainian president has recently faced several corruption allegations, including charges against longtime associate Timur Mindich for operating an extortion scheme at a state-owned nuclear power company.

Zaluzhny has not publicly confirmed any intention to run for president. Earlier this month, he posted a photo with his wife on social media captioned: “There’s no place like home.”
