Ukraine Accuses Russia of Continuing Strikes Despite Unilateral Truce Call

(MENAFN) Ukraine has accused Russia of continuing military attacks overnight despite a ceasefire initiative announced by Kyiv, according to statements from Ukrainian officials.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said that more than 100 drones and several missiles were launched during the hours following the start of the proposed truce period. He stated that strikes were reported in multiple locations, including the cities of Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.

Ukrainian officials described the continued attacks as a violation of the ceasefire proposal and called on international partners to increase pressure on Russia, including through expanded sanctions.

The ceasefire initiative was announced earlier in the week by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who stated that Kyiv would halt hostilities starting at midnight. His announcement came after a separate Russian proposal suggesting a temporary pause in fighting during the Victory Day period.

That Russian proposal, announced by President Vladimir Putin, invited Ukraine to observe a short-term halt in combat operations during commemorations marking the end of World War II in Europe.

Ukrainian officials, however, questioned the coordination of the proposal, stating that no formal communication had been received regarding its terms. Kyiv’s response did not clearly confirm whether it had engaged in direct discussions on the Russian initiative.

The ceasefire exchange comes amid continued escalation in rhetoric between the two sides. In remarks made earlier, Zelenskyy also warned of potential Ukrainian drone activity in relation to events in Moscow, further reflecting heightened tensions surrounding the proposed temporary truce period.
