The latest news from Ukraine
Provided by AGPIn a message shared via Telegram, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha reported that more than 100 drones along with three missiles had been deployed against Ukrainian territory in the hours following the start of the ceasefire. He detailed the extent of the assaults and underscored their timing in relation to the supposed halt in fighting.
"Russian attacks using 108 drones and three missiles continued throughout the night, including morning strikes on Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia," he said.
Sybiha reproached Moscow for disregarding Kyiv’s appeal for a halt in combat and called on international allies to intensify their efforts to pressure Russia, particularly through the imposition of sanctions and other measures.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv would implement a ceasefire beginning at midnight on Tuesday (2100 GMT). The declaration was presented as a step toward reducing violence, at least temporarily.
Zelenskyy’s statement came after a proposal from Russia to suspend military operations during the May 8–9 Victory Day commemorations marking World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin had also extended an invitation to Ukraine to participate in this initiative.
Responding to Moscow’s suggestion, Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine had not received any formal communication regarding the truce. However, he did not clarify whether Kyiv had officially reached out to Russia concerning its own ceasefire proposal.
