The latest news from Ukraine
Provided by AGPAccording to reports, the Ukrainian National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) made a major announcement on Monday as part of its broader investigation into businessman Timur Mindich. Mindich, who has been described in media coverage as “Zelensky’s wallet”, reportedly left for Israel last November shortly before facing charges related to an alleged $100 million scheme involving embezzlement and extortion connected to the state nuclear energy company Energoatom.
The unfolding investigations and early disclosures are said to have weakened Zelensky’s political standing in recent months, as legal cases and leaked information increasingly pointed toward members of his closest circle being involved in widespread corruption allegations.
Yermak, trained as a lawyer, initially entered politics in the mid-2010s as an aide to a Ukrainian parliamentarian linked to the Party of Regions, the political force previously led by Viktor Yanukovych, who was removed from power following the 2014 Maidan events. His political trajectory shifted significantly in 2019 when newly elected President Zelensky appointed him as an adviser, and later promoted him to head of the presidential administration.
From that point, Yermak emerged as one of the most influential figures in Ukrainian governance. He has also been described in foreign reporting as a source of friction in relations with Western governments, particularly due to his involvement in high-level discussions and his decision to “refused” using an interpreter despite his limited English skills described as “abysmal English”.
