UN Clash Over Starobelsk Strike as Russia, Ukraine Trade Accusations

(MENAFN) A heated exchange unfolded at the UN Security Council after Russia and Ukraine presented sharply conflicting accounts of a deadly drone strike on a student dormitory in Starobelsk.

Russia’s envoy to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, condemned what he called a “barbaric” attack and compared it to historical atrocities, arguing that the strike on the college residence could not be justified under any circumstances. Russian officials say the incident on May 22 killed 21 students and injured dozens more.

Ukraine’s representative, Andriy Melnyk, rejected those claims during the same Security Council session, dismissing the incident as a “so-called incident” and calling it a fabricated narrative promoted by Moscow. He denied Ukrainian responsibility and accused Russia of spreading disinformation.

The United States representative, Tammy Bruce, also spoke during the session, criticizing retaliatory strikes on Ukrainian territory as unacceptable, though stopping short of endorsing either side’s account of the specific incident.

Nebenzia further accused Western delegations of ignoring what he described as a deliberate attack, arguing that their responses reflected political bias. He claimed that Ukrainian forces had recently intensified drone operations, including strikes on civilian areas, while insisting Russian military actions target only military-related infrastructure.

Ukraine, however, has firmly denied involvement in the Starobelsk incident and characterized the allegations as misinformation. The broader exchange highlighted deep divisions within the Security Council over the ongoing conflict and competing narratives about recent escalations on the ground.
